Georgia climbs four positions in UN’s Information, Communication Tech Index, says Ministry of Economy

The Ministry of Economy on Friday said the country had climbed four positions in the 2024 Information and Communication Technology Development Index by the United Nations International Telecommunication Union to be ranked 57th among 170 countries.

Guram Guramishvili, the Deputy Minister of Economy, said the position placed the country as a leader in the South Caucasus region, surpassing both European Union membership candidate countries and “certain member states” in the index.

The improvement of Georgia's ranking in authoritative indices conveys a positive message to the international business community, indicating the country's readiness to attract higher levels of investment, particularly in the technological sectors”, Guramishvili said.

The official attributed the achievement to the Government's “effective policies” and “successful” structural reforms.

The information and communication technologies ecosystem in Georgia is currently undergoing active development. The country is supporting the advancement of technological companies and the development of broadband internet infrastructure. A state programme has been initiated to construct an optical fibre internet network that is expected to cover the entire country by 2025”, Guramishvili said.

Additionally, successful programmes aimed at developing digital skills are being implemented, leading to an increased demand for information and communication technologies”, he added.

The Index is used to evaluate and compare the ICT development of countries on a global scale. Comprising 10 criteria related to Universal Connectivity and Meaningful Connectivity, it provides insights into the level of ICT development within a country.
