The European External Action Service, the European Union’s diplomatic service, on Friday highlighted the bloc's commitment to supporting Georgia’s citizens and emphasised its continued backing for the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in a social media message.

It said the EU had been contributing to the security of Georgia through its Monitoring Mission since 2008.

With its headquarters in the capital city of Tbilisi and regional offices in Gori, Mtskheta and Zugdidi, the mission comprises about 200 civilian observers from EU member states.

The body said the bloc had also allocated a total budget of €354 million between 2008-2024, with €47 million earmarked for 2023 and 2024.

The mission aims to prevent the resurgence of hostilities and facilitate long-term stability, ultimately fostering a safe and normal life for the population residing along the administrative borders with Abkhazia and South Ossetia”, it said.

In addition to the Mission, the EU’s European Peace Fund has been strengthening the Georgian Defence Forces, the body added.

The Fund, which is currently implementing €62 million in aid for 2021-2023, has supported medical facilities, equipment for the Gori Military Hospital, trucks, engineering kits and cyber defence exercises and training.
