Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili on Thursday summed up this week's NATO Summit in Washington by saying his country was a “member of the [NATO] family” and pledging the Government would continue to “actively work with its partners in order to have specific, tangible results” for its Euro-Atlantic integration.

Darchiashvili noted the participation of a Georgian delegation in the Summit marking the 75th anniversary of the alliance was “very important”.

“Discussions were held on the challenges that the world is facing today in terms of security and therefore there were very in-depth discussions on how to work together and demonstrate that both member and partner countries are trying to overcome these challenges together. There were very interesting discussions”, he said.

Georgia is a member of this [NATO] family, Georgia's participation was very important, and we think that Georgia will continue to work very actively with its partners in order to have specific tangible results and progress in NATO integration, and I think it was a very right decision to invite partners to Washington, including Georgia”, he continued.

He further added the anniversary Summit had “stood out” from other meetings by being “more focused on global political messages”, while the “Georgian component” was included in its Declaration in terms of security.

Darchiashvili also reviewed his meeting with John Bass, the United States Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs.

I had the opportunity to meet John Bass, the Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs in Washington. We talked about existing challenges, regional challenges. We had an interesting and honest conversation. We talked about everything and I hope that Georgia and the United States will soon take specific steps to return relations to the normal mode. This is important for both countries and serves the stability and security of our country”, Darchiashvili said.

The top Georgian diplomat further expressed his hope that the two countries would soon take specific steps for the purpose.

“We are motivated to actively work with our main strategic partner, the United States, in order, on the one hand, to strengthen bilateral relations, and on the other hand, to work together to overcome common, global challenges”, he continued.

He added the bilateral meeting held at the State Department would “definitely bring specific results”.
