Georgian innovation project Digital University has been ranked as one of the top three European innovative projects implemented in penitentiary institutions, the country’s Ministry of Justice announced on Friday.
The European Organisation of Prison and Correctional Services named the project among the top three out of 37 initiatives for the Prison Achievement Award 2024 at the EuroPris 13th Annual General Meeting in the Bulgarian capital city of Sofia on June 26, the body said.
The success of the Digital University is another recognition of the current penitentiary system in our country. The project was launched in 2022, and it provides access to education for convicts and gives them the opportunity to remotely become involved in the university learning process, to attend lectures online and have direct, interactive communication with lecturers”, the body added.
The Ministry added human rights violations had been a “systematic problem” in the penitentiary system until 2012 based on assessments of international institutions, claiming the system had become “exemplary throughout Europe” under the current Government.
