Georgian PM sends condolences after celebrated violinist Liana Isakadze dies at 78

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Friday sent his condolences to the family and relatives of the internationally acclaimed Georgian violinist Liana Isakadze and to the public after the artist passed away at the age of 78.

I am deeply saddened by the death of Liana Isakadze, one of the outstanding modern musicians. Mrs. Liana became a legend during her lifetime with her brilliant talent. Her performance and conducting work, distinguished by her unique handwriting, brought her worldwide fame and recognition. Her fruitful work contributed to the promotion of classical music and gave a name to Georgian musical traditions in the world”, he added.

Born in Tbilisi, Isakadze played her first solo violin concert at age 10 in 1956.

Her career was heavily influenced with support and advice from the famed Soviet violinist David Oistrakh, with the emerging artist working as his assistant for two years.

The recipient of the 1965 Grand Prix from the Marguerite Long and Jacques Thibaud International Competition in Paris, Isakadze was also awarded first place at the 1970 Jean Sibelius International Violin Competition in Helsinki.

Isakadze was honoured for her performing career with the titles including the People's Artist of the Soviet Union and the Order of Honour of Georgia.

She was also the founder of the Night Serenades International Festival in the coastal city of Batumi and capital Tbilisi, with the event noted as the longest-running festival at 42 years.
