Fifty schoolchildren from 26 municipalities of Georgia have come together as young climate ambassadors for the fourth edition of the United Nations Development Programme-organised Green Camp, the Georgian office of the body said this week.
Organised by the UN body and the Environmental Information and Education Centre of the Georgian Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture with support from the UN Green Climate Fund and the governments of Georgia, Sweden and Switzerland, the Camp aims to “educate and empower the youth to take action against climate change”.
During the camp, the young participants are set to receive insights from environmental protection experts and learn about climate change. They will then work on planning local environmental projects, contributing to sustainable solutions and raising awareness in their communities, the UNDP said.
With an overall budget of $74 million, the seven-year programme is dedicated to reducing the risk of climate-driven disasters in Georgia.
