Levan Zhorzholiani, the Head of the Georgian Government Administration, on Tuesday said members of the Georgian national football team would have the opportunity to address their fans at a public celebration hosted in the country’s capital Tbilisi later today to mark their performance at the ongoing European Championship in Germany.
Zhorzholiani said the team’s supporters would be able to gather on Freedom Square at 10pm to celebrate and express their gratitude to the squad for their performance at the tournament.
I would like to extend my gratitude to players of our national team for the greatest positive emotions and excellent games they showed at the European Championship. For a debutant team, it was an unprecedented success, which has never been recorded in history”, he said.
Hosted by the Administration, the event will see the squad arrive to the Square on a team bus after a drive through city streets, with the celebration ending with fireworks.
The national team made history by advancing to the round of 16 in their debut Championship appearance. Despite a defeat in their opening match against Turkey, the team’s performances against Czechia and a famous win over Portugal in Group stage games secured their spot among the top 16 teams in Europe.
The squad were defeated 4-1 by Spain in the knockout round.
