Rati Ionatamishvili, the Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party faction in the Parliament, on Tuesday highlighted the Georgian Defence Forces’ contributions to international security and peacekeeping efforts after James O’Brien, the United States Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, on Monday announced Georgian troops had been invited to upcoming NATO partnership events in Washington.

Ionatamishvili noted the move was “the only right decision” that showed “once again that our country, our citizens and our military personnel are playing an important role”.

We remember how much disinformation was spread by the radical [domestic] opposition regarding this issue [invitation to the NATO Summit]. It would be embarrassing to even question this issue, given that Georgian [...] military personnel, fighters wounded in international missions, have made such a great contribution to the processes of international security and global peace - underestimating them would have been a great injustice”, he said.

The NATO Summit, set to take place in Washington between July 9-11, will host heads of state and governments of the 32 member states of the alliance, along with their partner countries and the European Union.
