The Georgian Public Defender’s Office on Tuesday held a working meeting with local and international organisations ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for October 26 to discuss the body’s mandate around election-related questions and existing challenges.

Public Defender Levan Ioseliani told participants his Office was “ready to examine all obtained information” and noted the readiness of regional representations of the Office to ensure “appropriate response” to potential violations of rights both during the campaign period and on election day.

Participants of the meeting noted the importance of “more active involvement” of the Office in related processes and effective cooperation with the body for locating individuals arrested during protests and monitoring their rights.

The sides also emphasised the “negative impact” of the recently adopted law on transparency of foreign influence on the non-governmental sector in the country.
