Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze and representatives of the Emergency Management Service of the country’s Ministry of Internal Affairs on Thursday paid tribute to the memory of the victims of the June 13, 2015 deadly flood in the city that claimed 21 lives.

The tribute marked nine years since the major flooding that caused the fatalities and left the remains of two individuals still missing.

Kaladze laid flowers at the memorial of the victims, with a memorial church service also performed.

June 13, 2015 is a very difficult day in the history of Georgia and the capital. We all remember how hard this day was for our city. Unfortunately, we lost many of our fellow citizens, and the infrastructure was destroyed. I would like to once again offer my condolences to their families, relatives and the whole of Georgia”, the Mayor said.

Representatives of the Service also visited a small village in the country's central Shida Kartli region to commemorate Zurab Muzashvili, the rescue officer who sacrificed his life to save six individuals during the flood.

The natural disaster also swept away cars and houses, destroyed roads and the downtown Tbilisi Zoo, which lost half of its animal population in the flood.
