The European Union on Sunday condemned a holding of “parliamentary elections” in Georgia’s Russian-occupied Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region on Sunday.

In his remarks over the matter, Peter Stano, the EU Spokesperson for External Affairs, noted that the bloc did not recognise the constitutional and legal framework in which the “elections” had taken place.

“The European Union does not recognise the constitutional and legal framework in which the so-called ‘parliamentary elections’ took place in Georgia’s occupied breakaway region of South Ossetia. The EU remains firm in its support to Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity”, Stano said in a social media message.

The Georgian foreign office on Sunday called on Russian authorities to “cease actions violating Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity”, fulfil international commitments taken up by the country, including in the August 12, 2008 ceasefire agreement, and withdraw its forces from Georgia’s territory.
