Levan Khabeishvili, the Chair of the United National Movement opposition party, on Saturday resigned from his position, citing health problems.
Khabeishvili announced the decision at a press briefing at the party’s central office, adding party member Tina Bokuchava would replace him.
He said doctors had recommended a more relaxed work regime after he received injuries during a rally against a law on transparency of foreign influence in Tbilisi in early May.
The outgoing Chair said he would nominate himself as a candidate for the position of the Chair of the Political Council of the party.
Khabeishvili was elected as party Chair in January 2023, after defeating his opponent Nika Melia in an election that followed intra-party controversies.
