Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili on Wednesday highlighted the adoption of a resolution by the United Nations General Assembly on Internally Displaced Persons and Refugees from the Russian-occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) regions of the country as a “great success for Georgian diplomacy”.

Darchiashvili’s comments followed the decision of the 78th UN General Assembly, which on Tuesday adopted the resolution on reiterating the right of return of all displaced persons and refugees to the regions after 103 countries voted in support, nine against and 52 abstained.

The Minister thanked the states that had supported the resolution, saying they had “once again expressed their support and assistance to hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons”.

As in previous years, this year too, the UN member states had the opportunity to become co-authors of the resolution, and in this way, be more actively involved in efforts aimed at solving this important issue. Sixty-four UN member countries joined the ranks of co-sponsors of the resolution from different regions of the world”, he noted.

The top Georgian diplomat highlighted the importance of the resolution by saying its adoption meant the issue of Georgia remained “on the agenda of the world's highest international forum”.
