Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Tuesday congratulated the Azerbaijani Government and people on Independence Day, the Parliament said.
The Georgian Parliament cited Papuashvili as conveying the "heartfelt congratulations” at an event marking the date in Tbilisi.
The Speaker noted the two countries'” historic dates” of declaring independence in the same year of 1918.
In 1918 [...] Georgia and Azerbaijan declared their independence simultaneously, established their first republics at the same time, and celebrated statehood together.
Unfortunately, this joy did not last long. However, the Soviet occupation could not suppress the two nations' aspiration and spirit towards statehood, identity, and independence”, he said.
Papuashvili recalled his visits to the country and said the “warm welcome” received during the trips have the Georgian side “motivation to further strengthen friendships and work together”.
I warmly recall each of my visits to Baku, the hospitality and warm reception extended by Ms. Sahiba Gafarova [...]. These relationships give us additional motivation to work with greater energy on deepening the connections between our countries and peoples”, the Georgian official said.
The politician expressed hope that bilateral relations would “bring more benefits” to the two nations.
We closely cooperate to ensure regional peace and prosperity. Only under such conditions can we continue to successfully develop our countries and fully realise the region's potential. Only in this way we build a solid bridge between Europe and Asia and fully reap its benefits. Once again, I congratulate the people of Azerbaijan on Independence Day. I wish your country progress, peace, and prosperity. I believe that cooperation between Georgia and Azerbaijan will bring many more benefits to our peoples”, Papuashvili concluded.
Azerbaijan marks the signing of the declaration of its independence in 1918 on May 28.
