Adrienne Watson, the United States National Security Council Spokesperson for the White House, on Saturday urged the members of the Georgian Parliament not to overturn President Salome Zourabichvili’s recent veto on the law on transparency of foreign influence.

In her social media post, Watson noted she was “glad” to see Zourabichvili “standing up for Georgian Euro-Atlantic future” by vetoing the law and called on the MPs to “show the same courage”.

Zourabichvili on Saturday vetoed the law, reintroduced by the ruling Georgian Dream party against the backdrop of ongoing public protests and criticism from Georgia’s foreign partner states.

The Parliament on Tuesday adopted the legislative piece, that calls for the registration of non-commercial legal entities and media outlets in the country as “pursuing the interests of a foreign power” if they derive more than 20 percent of their funding from abroad.
