Irakli Karkashadze, the Director of the United Airports of Georgia, on Wednesday said the project for a new international airport for the country’s capital Tbilisi had attracted “significant interest” at the Routes Europe forum this week in Aarhus, Denmark.
The Government announced the project for the new facility this month, with the venue set to be constructed near the capital city.
All major players in the industry are aware of the project and seem to be interested. Talks with architects, construction companies and operators will continue due to this growing interest. The Government’s decision to announce the construction of a new airport seems to be the right one”, he said.
Karkashadze added “active” work was underway to connect Tbilisi with more European capitals.
While we already offer flights from [the western] Kutaisi International Airport to Brussels, Paris, Rome, Berlin and other European capitals, our new strategy aims to establish direct flights from Tbilisi to as many capitals as possible. This will allow our passengers to enjoy more convenient travel options”, he said.
The United Airports of Georgia said Karkashadze held up to 30 meetings with partner airports and airlines as part of the forum over the past three days.
The meetings were held with strategically important European airlines and airports, with the aim of connecting all three international airports of Georgia”, the body said.
It added the meetings included representatives of British, German, French, Italian and Spanish airlines to “further strengthen and develop their presence” in the Georgian market.
