Mariam Kvrivishvili, the Deputy Economy Minister of Georgia, on Tuesday said “active work” was underway to schedule additional flights “at affordable prices” for football fans planning to travel to Germany for the upcoming Euro 2024 football championship.
The Ministry of Economy said Kvrivishvili earlier today met with representatives of domestic and foreign airlines operating in Georgia to discuss the possibility of adding flights to the German cities of Düsseldorf, Dortmund and Hamburg - the host locations of the Georgian football team’s games.
The Deputy Minister said the Government was “committed to working closely” with all airlines to ensure the additional flights.
Kobakhidze instructed the Ministry to facilitate the direct flights during the weekly Government meeting on Monday.
The Civil Aviation Agency last month said four airlines would operate regular flights between Georgia and Germany during the Championship, offering service in eight directions with about 30 flights per week.
The body added a 30 percent increase in flights between June and July, compared to the same period in 2023, was planned.
The increased interest in the flights comes after Georgia’s national football team claimed their first-ever spot at the European Championship after defeating Greece in the playoff final for the tournament on March 26.
The team will play their first match at the competition against Turkey on June 18 in Dortmund, with other group stage games set against the Czech Republic on June 22 in Hamburg and Portugal on June 26 in Gelsenkirchen.
