The newly appointed Head of the European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia Bettina Patricia Boughani on Saturday arrived in Tbilisi to assume her duties, the EUMM in Georgia said.

Upon her arrival to the country, Boughani said she was “delighted and humbled” to work at her new position, noting during her 35-year professional career she “has been driven by the commitment to promote security, peace and stability”.

She emphasised it would be an honour to lead the “dedicated” EUMM team in Georgia, whose “hard work” contributed to the stability and security in the country. “I hope my leadership will support them in such an important mission, which helps improve the daily lives of the conflict-affected population and build trust among communities”, Boughani added.

The Council of the EU appointed Boughani to the leadership position on March 26. The latter is a commissioned officer of the French National Gendarmerie and held various senior positions within the United Nations and the French Interior Ministry, the EUMM in Georgia noted.

The new EUMM Head was previously involved in peacekeeping “in sensitive political and security contexts” and was police Commissioner in the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali.
