Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze on Sunday said the country’s President Salome Zourabichvili’s “sole purpose” was to sabotage the upcoming parliamentary elections, so “all her statements are irrelevant”.
In his comments to the media, Kobakhidze noted Zourabichvili had confirmed her intention to obstruct the elections by vetoing amendments to the election code, which was later overridden by the Parliament.
The changes involve the transfer of the power to elect the Chair and members of the Central Election Commission to the President if the legislative body fails to elect them in two attempts.
In her decision to veto the bill, Zourabichili explained that the changes failed to improve the role of her office in the appointments, leaving it “limited”.
The Parliament did not consider Zourabichvili’s motivated remarks on the bill and supported the original version of the draft law at a plenary session on March 19 with 78 votes and 13 against.
