Georgian Foreign Minister Ilia Darchiashvili on Monday said reports claiming the country’s citizens had been kidnapped by a criminal group near the United States-Mexico border last week were “false and baseless”.

Darchiashvili’s comments followed the media reports last week that said 30 Georgian nationals, together with citizens of other countries who were trying to illegally reach the US border through Mexico, had been kidnapped by a criminal group.

In his comments to the media, the Minister alleged opposition-leaning domestic TV channels were “misleading the public” with the claims and urged them not to “put citizens in a situation that may lead to unclear processes”.

He also noted the country’s diplomatic missions were “ready to provide assistance and protect the rights of any Georgian citizen” abroad, and added the body would respond to  the several nationals in Mexico who had contacted the Ministry.
