The process of Euro-Atlantic integration of Georgia and progress achieved as part of it were discussed on Monday in a meeting between the country’s President Salome Zourabichvili and Jens Stoltenberg, the Secretary General of the alliance.
The meeting also reviewed the ongoing war in Ukraine and the significance of “solidarity” of international partners for the country, as well as the importance of the security of the Black Sea region on the backdrop of “increased threats” in the region due to the war and “Russia's aggressive actions”.
The officials also discussed Russia’s illegal holding of its presidential elections in the Russian-occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) regions of Georgia, with Zourabichvili noting the fact “grossly violates” the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country and “completely contradicts international norms”.
The President highlighted the situation in the country’s occupied territories, Russia’s plans to deploy a permanent naval military base in the city of Ochamchire in occupied Abkhazia, and planned launch of “technical flights” from Sokhumi airport in the regional capital.
Stoltenberg once again expressed his “unwavering support” for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia in his comments.
