The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Tbilisi on Thursday announced the launch of Georgia's first food bank initiative, funded by the European Union to ensure food security and address challenges of food loss and waste prevention.

The launch comes as part of the project Civil Society Actors as Levers for a Sustainable Food System in Georgia, and was marked by People in Need Georgia, along with the EU, the Czech Development Agency and partners earlier today.

The Embassy said the project would pilot a food bank initiative to address local food insecurity by redistributing unsold food items and test the impact of the new Law on Food Loss and Waste Reduction, Food Recovery and Redistribution.

It also aims to reduce food waste, farm losses, and greenhouse gas emissions, lowering food insecurity. Awareness-raising campaigns on food waste and loss will be conducted at the community level, the office added.
