Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Thursday lauded Italy as a “reliable ally” and highlighted “common European values” in a Tbilisi meeting with Massimiliano D'Antuono, the new Italian Ambassador to the country.

The meeting at the Government office also stressed the “historic significance” of Tbilisi obtaining the European Union membership candidate status last month, with the PM praising the “important role” of the Italian Government in the process, the Government press office said.

During the exchange, Garibashvili extended his gratitude to the Italian authorities for their “firm support” for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The discussion emphasised the significance of strengthening the current ties between the two nations, particularly in economic and trade relations, and further delved into the ongoing collaboration between Georgia and Italy in defence, education and culture, the press office added.

The meeting also highlighted “positive economic indicators” of Georgia and the “favourable investment environment” in the country.
