PM meets Georgian rescuers involved in Turkey earthquake relief efforts

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Friday thanked Georgian rescuers engaged in relief operations in southern Turkish city of Antakya following the February 6 earthquake for their efforts.

Meeting the professionals on the final day of his visit to Turkey, Garibashvili and his Government delegation visited the city to be introduced to the progress of the rescue efforts.

He thanked the “hero rescuers” who managed to save three survivors during their work since the first day in the aftermath of the earthquake. They also found more than 80 people dead in the rubble of buildings in the city.

“Georgia and the Georgian people stand next to Turkey and the Turkish people. I conveyed this message and my condolences to President Erdoğan, to whom I confirmed my support for Georgia and expressed our solidarity. This is a terrible tragedy that has befallen Turkey and our fraternal Turkish people”, Garibashvili said.

Crews and hardware from the Special and Emergency Operations Centre of Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs were deployed to help with the rescue efforts following an initiative by Garibashvili. They have been working to help deal with the aftermath of the disaster that killed more than 42,000 people in Turkey.

The head of the Georgian Government received a formal sendoff from the Antakya-Hatay International Airport by Fatih Dönmez, the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey, Ahmet Genger, the Deputy Governor of Hatay and Çağatay Kılıç, the Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Turkish Parliament.
