Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Wednesday said his Government was ready to cooperate and “reach a compromise” with the “destructive [domestic] opposition”, “only if it is mutual”, to fulfil the recommendations outlined by the European Union to grant its candidate membership status to the country.
The Government will work together with the opposition, despite their “acts of sabotage” to the country’s European integration, Garibashvili noted in his comments to the media following the European Commission's recommendation for the European Council to grant the country the EU membership candidate status.
From the very first day of receiving the 12 priorities [from the EU], our team addressed the opposition telling them that all doors were open and we wanted this process to be as inclusive as possible, [with their] involvement guaranteed, secured”, the PM added.
In his remarks, the Head of the Government slammed the country’s President Salome Zourabichvili and the opposition members by saying “neither the President nor the opposition has done anything on the path of our country's European integration”.
He stressed that “unfortunately” the representatives of the radical opposition did not join the working groups formed in the Parliament for the fulfilment of the EU priorities and instead “have been engaged in constant sabotage and destructive actions” for the last year.
The radical opposition and the President tried to be “somehow” involved in the fulfilment of the recommendations in the last weeks, only after there were positive messages from the bloc on Georgia’s EU candidacy, “it was a feeble attempt”, he added.
Garibashvili said it was the Georgian Dream Government that “has brought tangible results” to the country and Georgian people, adding he and his team would work with “even more enthusiasm and energy” and implement remaining recommendations and “bring this process [EU integration] to the end”.
