Josep Borrell, the European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs, on Tuesday said the bloc “strongly condemned” the killing of a Georgian citizen and the detention of another one by Russian occupying forces near a village adjacent to central Georgia’s occupied Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region.
In a social media message, the top EU diplomat stressed the Russian military presence in the Georgian occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) was “illegal”.
“The EU strongly condemns the killing of a Georgian citizen and the detention of another one by the Russian border guards in Kirbali. We call for an immediate release”, Borrell said.

Russian military presence in the Georgian occupied breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia is illegal.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Monday called on the international community to make an “appropriate assessment and response” to the development.
The Georgian national was killed in “firearm shots” as the occupation forces attempted to illegally detain him in the occupied territory, the State Security Service of Georgia said.
