Georgia is recognised as the “undisputed leader” among the countries of the European Union’s Eastern Partnership initiative, Mamuka Mdinaradze, the Executive Secretary of the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party, said on Monday.

During his address to a plenary meeting of the Georgian Parliament, Mdinaradze underlined Georgia “in many ways” was even ahead of the Western Balkan countries, which already “enjoy the status of EU candidate countries.”

The GD official highlighted the EU-Georgia Association Agreement, signed in 2014, as well as the visa-free travel to the Schengen area for Georgian citizens, in his comments on the subject.

The Georgian Parliament will consider a draft resolution on Georgia's accelerated accession to the European Union this week.

The resolution contains 13 points and calls on EU member states and institutions, as well as the Georgian Government, to take all necessary steps to accelerate Georgia's accession to the Union.

Georgia officially applied for membership on March 3, with Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili signing the country’s membership application
