The Georgian government’s job programme will aim to involve 100,000 citizens this year, offering them work instead of social assistance, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said on Wednesday.

Speaking of the recently announced initiative of his government in an interview with Rustavi 2 channel, the PM said 100-150 million GEL ($32-48 million/€29-43 million) had been allocated for the programme for this year.

Garibashvili also criticised the existing system, where the socially underprivileged families that were able to work received social assistance. The government head called the arrangement  "terrible", adding it "accustomed these people to laziness".

I want these people to get involved and earn more money, get a job, learn to work, develop skills - then they might work in the private sector, apply their skills there, and slowly change that mentality,”  Garibashvili explained.
