Georgia’s foreign minister David Zalkaliani discussed an initiative by prime minister of the country for facilitating regional mediation and a dialogue platform for ensuring peace and stability in the South Caucasus, during the participation of the Georgian delegation at the ongoing Munich Security Conference.

Zalkaliani attended a panel discussion on the South Caucasus region at the event, which concludes today, also attended by his counterparts from Azerbaijan and Armenia, as well as the OSCE Secretary General and the President of the World Bank and the German Development Agency.

[T]he Prime Minister of Georgia was the first to start this [mediation] process in June last year, and further steps have been taken. In particular, our initiative, which is part of the South Caucasus Peace and Neighbourhood Initiative, is an offer to our neighbours to turn Tbilisi into a dialogue platform, where specific projects will be discussed,” he said.

Zalkaliani highlighted a likelihood of an increase in the “attractiveness and function” of the region as a result of the implementation of the initiatives.

The minister said donor organisations were “ready to provide financial resources to develop specific projects in this regard”, noting their stance meant the initiative was supported from the partners.
