Levan Davitashvili, the Georgian Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, on Thursday said “all possible means” had been mobilised to bring the blaze that erupted last Friday in the central-western Borjomi municipality under control.
Today, the most urgent topic for us, our public, is wildfires - which, of course, are a big challenge for the country. [This has become an issue] [d]ue to the high temperature that has been in the country for the last few days, and the unprecedented dry season - in fact, we have not had precipitation in East Georgia for months”, he said.
"As for the damage [caused by the fire], it is too early to talk about this. The fire first spread to the lower layers of the forest, causing less damage to plants”, Davitashvili added.
The Vice PM also noted the fire was not expected to spread into a further area.
All possible means have been mobilised as much as possible to bring the fire under control, localise and extinguish it. [...] Everyone is fighting the fire with united forces. Also, we received assistance from the neighbouring country [Türkiye]. Neighbouring countries immediately announced their readiness to help, and I would like to thank them”, he continued.
Davitashvili also added the cause of the fire would be determined by an investigation, but added “the summer season is generally risky in terms of fires”.
