Strengthening of bilateral parliamentary relations and deepening of cooperation in trade, tourism, reforms, agriculture, sport and education were discussed on Friday in a meeting between a Georgian Parliamentary delegation and officials of the South African Parliament.
Nikoloz Samkharadze, the chair of the Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, informed his South African counterparts about the main foreign policy priorities of Georgia and the challenges in the Black Sea and South Caucasus regions, including the ongoing Russian aggression in Ukraine, in addition to introducing them to the “difficult situation” in the Russian-occupied territories of Georgia, the Georgian Parliament said.
The South African lawmakers confirmed their “strong support” for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia in the meeting.
They also took interest in the steps taken by the Georgian Parliament to strengthen supervisory functions and general reforms implemented in the country, and expressed their desire to visit Georgia to learn about the reforms implemented in combating corruption, reducing poverty, managing borders and developing state services.
[W]e had interesting meetings with South African legislators where we discussed various ways to strengthen our ties. [...] In the future, we plan to host them in Tbilisi and share our experience. We also received confirmation that South Africa will be loyal to the principle of the territorial integrity of Georgia”, Samkharadze said following the discussions.
