Two Georgian teachers have been distinguished with the state Green Award for promoting environmental and agrarian education, the Georgian Agriculture Ministry announced on Monday.

Nona Margoshvili, a kindergarten teacher from the eastern Akhmeta municipality, and Marine Porchkhidze, an English teacher from western Georgia’s Zestaponi municipality, were honoured with the prize on World Environment Day on Sunday, with the awards handed out by the country’s Agriculture Minister Otar Shamugia.

The official thanked the competition winners for their “day-to-day activities” to educate Georgia’s next generation and provide them with relevant education.

Established in 2018 by Environmental Information and Education Centre, the contest Green Award aims to identify and encourage educators who “actively use” the following textbooks Preschool Environmental Education and Environmental and Agrarian Education at School.

Founded in 1972 by the United Nations General Assembly, World Environment Day this year focused on living in harmony with nature with the slogan Only One Earth, the Ministry said.
