Russia has announced its withdrawal from the United Nations Tourism Organisation, Zurab Pololikashvili, the Georgian Secretary General of the UNWTO, said on Twitter on Wednesday.
"UNWTO was the first United Nations agency to address the membership of Russia. Today, Russia announced their intention to withdraw from the UNWTO. Our statues are clear: promotion of tourism for peace and universal respect for human rights. Only Members that abide by this can be part of the UNWTO," Pololikashvili tweeted.

On Tuesday, the Secretary General expressed hope member states would support the suspension of Russia's membership in the organisation over its invasion of Ukraine.
"In this case, the suspension of membership will be an example that all countries must respect the rules,” Pololikashvili said.
The official also called on member states to consider suspending Russia from membership on February 27, amid the country's ongoing military aggression against Ukraine. He pointed out Russia's actions contradicted the "fundamental aims” of UNWTO.
