Man saved from residential building rubble in Batumi in severe but stable condition

The condition of a man rescued from the rubble of a building which collapsed in Batumi last week is severe but stable, says director of MedCenter clinic Medea Kajaia.

She said that Zviad Tavdgiridze, 37, who is one of the survivors of the tragic incident, will stay in the intensive care unit until fully recovered.

Sister of Zviad Tavdgiridze, Maia Tavdgiridze, says that her brother spent 11 hours in an upright position after the residential building collapsed.

He said that he was sitting on the sofa, drinking coffee when the building collapsed. He has twins and a wife. They left home just 10 minutes before the collapse", she said.

Nine people including three minors died after a large section of the residential building collapsed in Batumi on October 8. 

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili sent his condolences to the families of those who died in Batumi and said that the government will do its best to help the residents of the collapsed building. 

The Government of Adjara has done everything and we, the central government, will stand by them that as soon as possible everyone is given residential apartments. In addition, they will receive monetary compensation in order to arrange appropriate conditions in their homes", Garibashvili said.

Today is a day of mourning in Georgia for the victims of the tragedy.
