150 Indian students from the Faculty of Science and Education at Batumi State University in the Georgian Adjara region will have their student status suspended due to coronavirus restrictions on travel from India.

The resolution of the Academic Council of the University of April 20, 2021 reads that only students of Batumi State University that are present in Georgia should be allowed to participate in the distance learning process.

The same resolution says that students who fail to appear in the office of the Dean of the Faculty on May 13-14, 2021, in order to sign the academic registration certificate, will be subject to administrative proceedings for suspension of student status.

The Tolerance and Diversity Institute of Georgia has released a statement regarding the 'alarming decision against the Indian students' made by Batumi State University, stating the decision ‘lacks objective and rational reasoning’.

It offers the students online learning, however, requires them to be present in Georgia and to turn up at the dean’s office to sign the registration paper. Batumi State University does not take into consideration the clearly objective circumstances that due to the harsh pandemic situation and the strict restrictions for students to travel from India to Georgia, they are unable to arrive in Georgia to sign the papers on time. The university does not allow the students to undergo registration online. The decision of the university is ungrounded and discriminatory", reads the statement.

Indian students often address Agenda.ge, asking to help them find out what are the possibilities to come to Georgia on time and not to lose the status of student.

This is the latest message send by one of the Indian students to us:

There are 200 students who want to come by charter flight [to Georgia]. We have arranged charter flights too but we are not getting permission and we are on the edge of losing our semester",  reads the message sent by Konigin Charu.

On April 15, 2021 the Georgian government announced new restrictions, introducing differential rules for Indian students on arrival to Georgia.

Per the amendment the students travelling from India will be able to enter Georgia only by charter flights. Hence, beyond the additional financial burden, the Indian students are unable to travel to Georgia freely at any time desired by them.
