Passenger traffic down by 4% at Georgian airports in Jan-Feb 2020

Georgia’s three international airports served 597,506 passengers in January-February 2020, which is a four per cent decrease in comparison to the same period of 2019, says the United Airports of Georgia.

While the number of passengers increased at Kutaisi and Batumi international airports, Tbilisi International Airport actually served less passengers this year. The United Airports of Georgia explains the reason is the Russian flight ban to and from Georgia which came into force on July 8, 2019 and the suspension of direct flights from and to China and Iran related to avoiding the spread of the coronavirus.

In January-February 2020 Georgian international airports served:

• Tbilisi International Airport served 399,557 passengers - a 19% decrease y/y
• Kutaisi International Airport served 156,784 passengers – 51% increase
• Batumi International Airport served 40,251 passengers – 33% increase

Georgia’s rural airports also saw an increase in passenger numbers last month.

Queen Tamar Airport in Mestia, Svaneti region, served 646 passengers in February, which was a 84% increase y/y.

Meanwhile, Ambrolauri airport in Georgia’s Racha region, served 38 passengers (+9%) last month.
