Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia has congratulated Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on the New Azerbaijan Party’s win in snap parliamentary elections yesterday, Azerbaijani media reports.
Gakharia has made a phone call and congratulated Aliyev on the landslide victory of the New Azerbaijan Party, headed by the president, in the parliamentary elections. President Aliyev thanked him for the attention and congratulations,” News.az reports.
The media outlet also said that Gakharia and Aliyev expressed readiness for further strengthening of ties.
President Aliyev, who has been in power for 17 years, proposed snap elections back in December 2019, nine months before they were due.
Ruling party top figures stated that the move was to support the president's policy on reforms.
The New Azerbaijan Party won about 65 of 125 seats in the single-chamber parliament.
