Wizz Air, AirBaltic, Georgian Airways cancel, postpone flights amid pandemic

Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air, Latvian flag carrier AirBaltic and Georgian Airways have made changes to their flight schedules amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Wizz Air has cancelled its flight between Riga and Tbilisi that was scheduled on December 19. It also postponed:
- flight between Dortmund and Kutaisi until December 18, 2020
- flight between Vilnius and Kutaisi until January 12, 2021
On.ge online media outlet reported based on the Georgian Civic Aviation Agency (GCAA) that the decision on postponement was made due to the border restrictions imposed in Latvia, Lithuania and Germany amid the coronavirus-related epidemiological situation there.
Meanwhile, AirBaltic has also cancelled its regular flights until November 28. However, it will be carrying out flights for repatriation of Georgians and foreigners amid the pandemic.

Tbilisi-based Georgian Airways will meanwhile continue to carry out its Tbilisi-Vienna-Tbilisi and Tbilisi-Berlin-Tbilisi flights one a week only.
However, Tbilisi-Berlin-Tbilisi flights will be cancelled on

- November 27
While Tbilisi-Vienna-Tbilisi flights will be cancelled on
- November 5
- November 12
- November 19

The GCAA calls on the citizens to plan their flights carefully and to take into consideration the coronavirus-related restrictions published by official, verified sources.

However, the government has evacuated over 10,000 Georgian citizens from abroad amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Meanwhile, around 20,000 others were provided with accommodation, food, basic needs, medicines, financial help, online medical consultations and support to receive medical services abroad.
Coronavirus has spread to a nursing home of the west Georgian city of Kutaisi in the Imereti region.
Georgia has reported 2,401 new cases of coronavirus, 2,289 recoveries and 20 deaths in the past 24 hours. 15,332 individuals remain infected with Covid-19 in Georgia as of today.Georgia has had 49,218 cases of coronavirus since February 26, 2020. Since then 33,459 individuals have recovered, while 401 others have died. 4,489 patients are undergoing treatment in hospitals as of today. 638 of the 4,489 patients are in critical condition. 293 of the 638 critical patients are on artificial ventilation. 1,127 Covid-19 patients are in hotels, while 3,160 individuals are in quarantine.
Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia has tested positive for coronavirus. The prime minister’s press office says Gakharia feels well and will stay home to fight the disease. The news follows his announcement yesterday via Facebook that he had gone into self-isolation after one of his security guards tested positive for coronavirus the day before.
Georgia intends to restore more direct flights to Europe starting November, said Georgian PM Giorgi Gakharia earlier today.
Regular international flights will not resume in Georgia until December 31, 2020 announces the Georgian Civil Aviation Agency.
Hungarian lowcoster Wizz Air is planning to restart flights in Georgia starting March 2021 and to add new destinations as well.
European aviation closed out 2020 with 6.1 million fewer flights operated and over half the aircraft in Europe grounded, says Eurocontrol in its newly published paper called ‘What COVID-19 did to European Aviation in 2020, and Outlook 2021’ noting that Georgia’s air traffic decreased the most amongst European states.
airBaltic, the flag carrier of Latvia, is resuming Riga-Tbilisi-Riga flights starting March 28, announces the Georgian Civil Aviation Agency. Flights will be carried out twice a week - on Mondays and on Thursdays.
Lufthansa is increasing its existing flight frequency as well as adding new destinations to and from Georgia, announces Georgian Economy Minister Natia Turnava. She said that Lufthansa is adding Frankfurt-Tbilisi-Baku flights and starting July 1 the flights will be carried out four times a week - on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays.
Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air will resume flights to six new destinations from Georgia’s western Kutaisi International Airport starting July 1 after an eleven-month pause.
A Georgian Airways plane carrying 180 people from Tbilisi to Vienna made an emergency landing at Tbilisi International Airport on September 5.
