Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia says that despite the sharp growth of new cases of the coronavirus, Georgia still remains a green state status and a safe destination for tourists.

He stated earlier today that the government has no plans to impose any systemic restrictions as the country must go back to a normal way of living and Georgian citizens must learn to live with the coronavirus.

Gakharia stated that the country is managing and adapting to the coronavirus and the government has taken all measures to prepare for this stage, which includes the early detection of the virus and effective treatment of infected individuals.

Risk management and adaptation covers the early detection of the virus to contain its spread, effective treatment and the quick return of individuals to their normal lives,” Gakharia said.

Gakharia said that previous, systemic restrictions and the lockdown served the goal of the government to get ready for the adaptation and management stages of the virus.

We contained the spread of the virus very effectively, through the earlier, strict restrictions which allowed us to get our health system ready for the adaptation and management stage of the virus. Our medical personnel have been retrained and we are able to test a large number of people on a daily basis,” Gakharia said.

He said that the 112 service and fever centres around the country are working effectively and instead of only Lugar Lab, which was able to test people for the coronavirus at the early stage of the virus, there are 22 labs now around the country which can do the same job.

Instead of daily 200 PCR tests, we can today conduct 9,000 such daily tests,” Gakharia said.

He stated that only local restrictions may be imposed in some areas of the country, taking the epidemiological situation into account.

The government has no plans to declare any systemic restrictions. A normal way of living must be restored in the country, including the opening of schools. We must learn to live with the virus, which means observing simple hygiene rules and distancing,” Gakharia said.

Georgia has reported 259 new cases of  the coronavirus earlier today and 62 recoveries.

Most of the cases are in the coastal Adjara region of Georgia.
