The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has accepted cases of Geogian social activists Giga Makarashvili, Zuka Berdzenishvili and Irakli Kacharava who were detained during the November 18 rally dispersal in Tbilisi.
The applications were prepared by the Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association (GYLA).
Eduard Marikashvili, a lawyer of the GYLA told on.ge that the main demand was for the ECHR to recognise the violation of freedom of assembly and association.
In a Facebook post, Giga Makarashvili writes that he and the other two victims did not ask for compensation, as they ‘will not take money from the pockets of poor Georgians’.
Ten individuals, including the members of the civic movement Shame, Giga Makarashvili, Zuka Berdzenishvili and Irakli Kacharava, were detained at parliament in Tbilisi for disobedience to police and hooliganism while protesting the rejection of the ruling-party proposed election bill.
The bill would have allowed for the early transition to a fully proportional system starting from 2020 instead of the scheduled 2024.
Giga Makrashvili, Irakli Kacharava and Zuka Berdzenishvili spent 12, four and seven days in prison.

Demonstrators who have been protesting the rejection of the election bill since November 14 have gathered in front of the administration building of the government of Georgia in central Tbilisi earlier today, demanding snap parliamentary elections with the use of a fully proportional electoral system, conducted by an interim government.Protests in Tbilisi were sparked after the ruling Georgian Dream party proposed election bill last week was scrapped.
The Georgian Interior Ministry has used water cannon to disperse the rally in front of parliament in Tbilisi after demonstrators refused to leave the territory and allow MPs in the legislative body. The demonstrators, who are protesting the rejection of an election bill, refused to leave the area within 30 minutes, in the time given to them by the Interior Ministry.
Voting on a bill proposed by the Georgian Dream (GD) ruling party to change the electoral system to a fully proportional one starting from 2020 instead of 2024 has been postponed as the GD requested this. The vote will take place tomorrow as the ruling party needs another meeting “to assure” several of its MPs to vote for the bill.

Georgian justice minister Rati Bregadze on Thursday said the decision of the European court of human rights on Georgian authorities having shown “a degree of tolerance” towards protesters of a 2019 demonstration in Tbilisi “clearly emphasised” that protection of human rights in Georgia was carried out “at a very high level” and in accordance with the “European standard”.
