Georgia is following international trends in travel and will soon decide what to do in terms of international tourism, taking into account the need to maintain a low infection rate in the country.
Opening up international tourism was one of the main issues the government discussed at the Inter-agency Coordination Council meeting earlier today.
The standards set for tourists and their transportation will be the same as the requirements of Georgian citizens for long-distance transportation, says the Georgian government.
At the Inter-agency Coordination Council meeting, members of the Georgian government noted the importance of a cautious and gradual approach to opening up tourism and said that the safety of citizens is the top priority for the Georgian government.
Georgia was negotiating with partner countries like Israel and various European countries to restart flights but this has been since postponed due to deteriorating epidemiological situations there.
Georgia has already opened domestic tourism since June 15, while the decision to resume international tourism and countries for which Georgia will open its borders will be made soon, taking into account the epidemiological situation.
Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia has hosted members of the diplomatic corps at Lopota Lake in the Kakheti region earlier today, where he spoke about the coronavirus crisis, the country’s plans to reboot the economy, how to proceed with the October elections and other intentions.Gakharia noted domestic tourism has resumed today in Georgia and that ‘Kakheti is lucky as Georgia’s best friends, foreign ambassadors, are visiting the region as tourists.’
Georgian Foreign Minister David Zaklaliani has spoken with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas to discuss relations between the countries amid the coronavirus including the resumption of flights between Georgia and Germany.
Domestic tourism resumes today in Georgia, while the country will open its doors to international tourists on July 1. Railway travel also resumes today. Georgian Railway officials say the company is ready to ensure the safe transportation of passengers and to implement the regulations imposed by the Ministry of Health of Georgia.
Georgia has postponed its green corridor tourism agreement with Israel following an uptick in coronavirus cases there.
Activity at Georgia’s land borders is being effectively monitored, Georgian PM Giorgi Gakharia stated earlier today, but noted the government does not plan to ‘take any fast steps’, and so land borders will not be opening yet.
Germany is lifting entry restrictions for citizens of 11 non-EU countries including Georgia from today.
