European Georgia opposition legislator Otar Kakhidze and ruling party MP Irakli Beraia verbally insulted and physically attacked each other at the meeting of Parliament’s Legal Affairs committee earlier today, where the committee members were discussing a bill on the selection and appointment of the Supreme Court judges.
Beraia claims that he wanted to ask a question regarding the bill and Kakhidze did not allow him to do so.
I asked him to act normally and allow me to ask a question. My remark irritated him. I have the impression that Kakhidze wanted to leave the meeting and was looking for a reason [to exit],” Beraia said.
Kakhidze says that Beraia verbally abused him which gave rise to the brawl.
I spoke against the violation of the committee procedures and my colleague Beraia allowed himself to abuse me at that time,” Kakhidze said.
He excused himself for the behaviour and added that “sometimes it is very hard to control yourself.”
