Georgian police have detained the head of the GVK Hospitality construction company after 16-year-old Giorgi Beshkenadze died at a construction site on July 16.

The individual has been detained earlier today for the violation of safety regulations.

The ministry has confirmed that Beshkenadze was underage (b. 2003) and should not have been employed at the site.

The construction work was being carried out in the Isani district, on the outskirts of Tbilisi.

The boy fell into an elevator shaft and died on the scene.

Employees of the Health and Labour Ministry of Georgia stated the same day that the possible reason for his death was the violation of safety regulations.

The Georgian Public Defender has released a statement, urging for higher standards of inspection of safety norms.

More than 400 have died in the workplace between 2010 and 2018, official statistics of the Interior Ministry read.
