Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili has told Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis in Riga that Georgia needs the support of partner states to convince Russia and remind the country that Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic course is irreversible.
Zurabishvili thanked the Latvian government for its “continued support” for Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic Integration and sharing of its experience, and mentioned the April 9, 1989 tragedy in Georgia, when Georgians took to the streets demanding the independence from the Soviet Union.

The date led to the country’s independence. It will be hard to imagine 30 years ago that today Latvia to be the member of the EU and NATO and Georgia to be so close to the membership of the two. We have come to the current position with the help of our partners and allies,” Zurabishvili said.

She stated that on the 10th anniversary of the EU’s Eastern Partnership (EaP) format, Georgia speaks about the achievements made, as well as the goals which should be achieved.
During the conference in Batumi, which will be held in July 2019 and will be dedicated to the 10th anniversary of the EaP, Georgia will be able to express its ambition, plans and views on how to achieve progress to the EU, despite the current complications in the unity,” Zurabishvili said.
Zurabishvili stated that Georgia “knows how to strengthen ties with NATO,” and push its open-door policy.
