The United States (US) is proud to partner with Georgia to continue supporting a nation that is sovereign and free, the US Embassy to Georgia stated on the 97th anniversary of the Day of Soviet Occupation today.

On this somber day we remember Colonel Alexandre Chkeidze’s defiant and inspiring words at the first graduation of cadets from the Georgian Military School in 1920", the US Embassy said.
Just five months later, the Red Army occupied Tbilisi. Despite the ensuing 70-year Soviet Occupation, the resilient Georgian spirit was never broken", the statement further said.

The Georgian national flag has been flying at half-mast today at government buildings across the country in remembrance of the hundreds of thousands of young soldiers and citizens who died in the battle against Red Army forces that took the capital of Tbilisi 97 years ago on February 25.

The Day of Soviet Occupation was first officially marked in Georgia by the former government in 2010.
