Certain Georgian citizens who lost their Georgian citizenship in previous years as a result of accepting foreign citizenship are now allowed to appeal to the Public Service Development Agency of the Ministry of Justice to restore their Georgian citizenship.

The law approved by the Georgian parliament during the spring session of 2018 allowed dual citizenship for Georgian nationals.

Earlier, receiving the citizenship of any foreign country meant automatic deprivation of the Georgian citizenship.

Only the president of Georgia has been authorised to grant dual citizenship.

To restore Georgian citizenship:

  • An individual must know the Georgian language on the level specified by the law.
  • He/she must not be wanted by police or law enforcement agencies.
  • No extradition or other related procedures must be launched against them.

If an individual meets the criteria and has Georgian citizenship restored, their underage children will automatically receive Georgian citizenship.
