Italian president arrives in Georgia on first official visit

Italian President Sergio Mattarella arrived in Georgia today on his first official visit to the country.
The arrival will give a new impulse to Georgian-Italian relations. It is a very important visit. Italy is Georgia’s strong supporter on its way to the EU and NATO. We have very good dynamics in bilateral relations,” the Georgian Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani stated.

Zalkaliani said that economic and political issues will be discussed during the visit, an economic forum will be held and several bilateral agreements will be signed.
The Georgian Foreign Ministry reported that Mattarella will meet the Georgian president, prime minister, parliament speaker and patriarch and will also visit Tbilisi State University with Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze.
More than $135 million was sent to Georgia from abroad during June of this year which is a 14.8 percent increase in remittances y/y.
Russia, Greece and Italy are the largest remittance senders in April 2018, says the National Bank of Georgia (NBG). Last month Georgia received $35.3 million in remittances from Russia, $14.5 million from Italy and $14.9 million from Greece.

The Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze has initiated consultations on an agreement which concerns the protection and support of investments between Georgia and Italy. He said that Georgia has already signed such a document with 34 foreign countries.
President of Georgia Salome Zurabishvili was welcomed in Rome on Tuesday with a ceremony at the Quirinal Palace of the city marking the beginning of her official visit.
