German Language Month to bring cultural and educational events across Georgia

A month-long program of events for literature, theatre, education and sport is set to launch the celebration of German Language Month across Georgia on Thursday.
Hosted in various cities, it is organised by German, Swiss and Austrian embassies and cultural agencies to promote the language and offer educational and entertaining events for visitors.
This year the program will see German-language authors meet readers, theatre troupes offer shows, film screenings host cinema enthusiasts and students invited to learn about exchange programs abroad.

The celebration is set to open with the musical Abrazo — Tango for Survival at Tbilisi’s No. 6 School, where Artist Alexandra Prusa, dancer Ariel Gutierrez and tango quartet Javier Fernandez y su Orquesta ipica will entertain performing art fans.
Based on a 1930s story about migration in Switzerland, the performance will be hosted by the Swiss embassy in Georgia.
Among the following events of the program, filmmaker Sebastian Schipper’s 2015 drama Victoria will be screened at the Fabrika venue, a former Soviet sewing factory in downtown Tbilisi.
The Berlinale festival- and European Film Awards-nominated feature claimed over 15 prizes at international festivals and cinema occasions since its release.

Its screening will be organised by the German embassy and the Goethe Institute Georgia.

Known for its history tied with 19th century German settlers in Georgia, the city will welcome participants of the reading within literary event Ice Road.
In another part of the country, the Imereti provincial capital Kutaisi will be the spot for the football tournament Goethe Cup, involving German Language Month participants keen for sporting activity.
Back in capital Tbilisi, Tbilisi State University will host a meeting between prize-winning poet Ron Winkler and German language students, while a talk about the 1954 novel I'm Not Stiller by Swiss author Max Frisch will be open at the Swiss embassy.
Following these and other events marking the celebrations, the German Language Month will be concluded with a live coverage of 2018 World Cup matches between Germany and Mexico and Switzerland and Brazil at the Goethe Institute on June 17.
