A Georgian girl has become the European champion in sambo in the 72kg weight category.

Nino Odzelashvili triumphed in her weight class and was crowned champion at the European Sambo Championship, currently underway in the Belarus’ capital of Minsk.

Defeating her Russian competitor, Odzelashvili traditionally celebrated her victory by dancing.

This has been the second time that Odzelashvili won the championship. Last year she made history by becoming the country’s first-ever female European champion in sambo in Kazan, Russia.

Georgia’s national sambo team won a total of 3 medals at the prestigious tournament. The medals include one gold, one silver and one bronze.

The silver medal went to Paata Gviniashvili (90kg), while the bronze medal went to Levan Berberashvili (52kg).

Sambo is a Russian-style martial art and combat sport. The word sambo is an acronym, which literally translates in English to ‘self-defence without weapons’.
