’Scary Mother’, ’Dede’ among Asia Pacific Screen Awards nominees

Young director Ana Urushadze's award-winning film Scary Mother and Mariam Khatchvani's feature Dede have been unveiled among nominees selected for honours at this year's Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA).

Revealed earlier today, the shortlist of nominees for the prestigious awards feature 41 films representing 21 countries.

Among them is Scary Mother, the feature debut of Urushadze, which will compete in three categories at the awards ceremony next month.

The Sarajevo Film Festival- and Locarno International Film Festival prize-winning work was picked alongside famed Russian filmmaker Andrey Zvyagintsev's Loveless, The Third Murder by Japan's Hirokazu Koreeda, Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts by Indonesia's Mouly Surya and Sexy Durga by Indian director Sanal Kumar Sasidharan.

Urushadze's film is also part of nominations for Achievement in Cinematography (Mindia Esadze) and Best Performance by an Actress (Nata Murvanidze).

In the APSA Cultural Diversity Award under the patronage of UNESCO, Dede by Mariam Khatchvani was shortlisted alongside Aktan Arym Kubat's Centaur, Jun Robles Lana's Die Beautiful, Dechen Roder's Honeygiver Among the Dogs and Haobam Paban Kumar's Lady of the Lake.

Khatchvani earned the East of the West special jury prize for her work at this year's Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

The awards ceremony for the APSA will be held on November 23 in Brisbane, Australia.

It was launched to recognise and promote "cinematic excellence and cultural diversity of the world’s fastest growing film region", and will mark the 11th edition this year.

Last year's awards saw Georgian director Rusudan Glurjidze's award-winning film House of Others nominated for the Achievement in Cinematography prize.
